Surprisingly, it doesn’t take a lot of signal to get the temperature monitor to update. Unfortunately some national parks have little cell reception. The Waggle does obviously does need to have a cell signal to indicate the temperature in the rig. Over the next several weeks, we will be hiking in national parks which don’t allow dogs. But I was very glad to see Waggle doing its job in that department. I wasn’t greatly concerned because I knew he was there. I got the alert that there was a loss of power. Not only does the device provide real-time temperature and humidity updates, it also indicates an RV power loss.įor example, my husband was at home working on our microwave when a breaker tripped. And, I’ve found it to be a great asset to our RV life. I’ve recently had the opportunity to use the Waggle Pet Monitor. Our Wi-Fi is not good in a lot of places, and we can’t rely on that monitor to honestly update us. Since we left to be full-time on the road, that concern has rang true. The problem was, there was spotty Wi-Fi, and if the Wi-Fi glitched at all, I would lose my signal and have to return to the rig and reset the monitor. So, we got a pet monitor that works with Wi-Fi. What would happen if the power went out or an air conditioner quit? We were in Arkansas where it gets up to 100 degrees in the summer. I was always concerned about my one dog at the time. When we began RVing full-time about two years ago, we were stationary in an RV park and we went to work every day several miles away. Waggle updates can let you see what’s going on with the temperature and allow you to return to the RV quickly if there is a problem. Whether you are a full-time RVer with pets, like me and my husband, or you head out for a 6-month season, or even if you just spend a few weekends a year in your RV, you know you want to make sure your pets are safe while you are away from your rig.ĭuring the summer, that RV can get up to dangerous temperatures if your air conditioner were to quit or the power went out in your RV park. For example, in the Northern hemisphere, we begin summer on June 21. As you move towards the poles, summer and winter days have different amounts of daylight hours in a day. As the Earth rotates, different places on Earth experience sunset and sunrise at a different time. Since the Earth completes one rotation in about 24 hours, this is the time it takes to complete one day-night cycle. As Earth rotates, the side of Earth facing the Sun experiences daylight, and the opposite side (facing away from the Sun) experiences darkness or nighttime. Nootka had a complement of 14 officers and 245 ratings. As built, the destroyer had a standard displacement of 1,927 long tons (1,958 t) and 2,745 long tons (2,789 t) at deep load. The ship was 335 feet 6 inches (102.3 m) long between perpendiculars and 377 feet (114.9 m) long overall with a beam of 36 feet 6 inches (11.1 m) and a draught of 13 feet (4.0 m). By the time the second batch of Canadian-built Tribals, Cayuga and the second Athabaskan, began construction, Canada was capable of providing the steel. The steel was imported from the United States. Furthermore, on the first batch, Micmac and Nootka, there was a shortage of high-quality steel in Canada required in the construction of destroyers. ĭuring construction delays soon began due to a shortage of skilled labour and engineering personnel. Canadian Tribals were a foot longer than their British counterparts and carried an auxiliary boiler for heating and additional power requirements. Design modifications were made after deficiencies were noted in Iroquois, the lead ship of the Canadian Tribals. They were ordered with modified ventilation and heating systems for North Atlantic winter service. Therefore, it was decided that Canadian shipyards would construct the second batch of Tribals. However, due to war demands, British yards could not accommodate such a request. The Naval Staff intended to order the construction of a flotilla of Tribals, with two under construction every year. Canada chose the design based on its armament, with the size and power of the Tribal class allowing them to act more like small cruisers than as fleet destroyers. The Tribals were designed to fight heavily armed destroyers of other navies, such as the Japanese Fubuki class. The Tribal class were ordered by the Canadian Naval Staff's intent to build a stronger, permanent force. The ship was sold for scrap and broken up at Faslane, Scotland in 1965. Nootka was the second Canadian Tribal to be constructed in Canada and the second Canadian warship to circumnavigate the world. She received the unit name Nootka while still under construction in Halifax, Nova Scotia after the RCN renamed the Fundy-class minesweeper Nootka (J35) to Nanoose (J35) in 1943. Constructed too late to take part in the Second World War, the ship saw service in the Korean War. Drake, together with George Bissel, a New York lawyer who will be introduced below, became the founders of the modern oil industry. ![]() In other words, it was not only the first commercial oil well it was also the largest producer at that time ever. ![]() The well is said to have produced up to 20 barrels a day using a hand pump, more than any other well had produced at the time. The well was as such no drilling hazard even, though, for obvious reasons, it lacked a blow-out preventer. The reservoir was normally pressured, which was why they could drill into the reservoir without any fluids flowing into the hole and causing a blowout. Unlike many other spectacular discoveries, such as Spindletop in 1901 ( GEO ExPro 03/2008), the Drake Well was no gusher. The wildcat had turned into a discovery.ĭrake arrived on the scene the following morning and found Smith guarding the well that was now flowing at a snail’s pace of about 10 barrels a day. A dark-coloured fluid was floating on top of the water within a few feet of the drill-floor. Smith, originally a blacksmith, who had spent much of his life drilling salt wells, visited the well and looked into the pipe. The next day, the experienced driller, William A. “They had absolutely no idea that they had struck oil that late afternoon,” says Zolli. So they put away their tools and went home for the weekend, totally unaware that they were about to change the course of history. Nowadays, a drilling break would have alerted the crew, but the driller had, as can be easily understood, absolutely no experience in drilling into an oil reservoir. It was caused by the drillbit entering the porous sandstone reservoir that later proved to contain oil. Using drilling jargon, this much quoted historical account can be translated as a “drilling break”, a sudden increase in the rate of penetration. 1 m) a day on the average, the drill “dropped into a crevice and slipped down another six inches (15cm)”. On the afternoon of Saturday, August 27, after having drilled to 69.5 ft (21.2 m) below the ground, at 3 ft (ca. The Drake Well was spudded in the middle of August 1859 following a one year ordeal trying to get hold of a reliable driller and securing the necessary funds that were quickly running out. More important for the Drake Well, a number of salt and fresh water wells in the western Appalachian had encountered small quantities of liquid petroleum during the previous decades.ĭrake # 1 was thus a true wildcat, without a specific target, and without any kind of geological reasoning- simple surface observations were used to find the well location. Owen (AAPG Memoir 6, 1975), “it seems reasonable to credit priority to the phenomenal Baku field for the world’s first drilled oil well”. ![]() The reason for being a little cautious is that wells both finding and producing oil had been drilled in many other places around the world, long before the Drake # 1 well, and according to E.W. Zolli, director of the Drake Well Museum in Titusville, Pennsylvania, has no desire to take part in a competition over which is the world’s first oil well, which explains why she prefers phrasing it like this. As such, it launched the modern oil industry in 1859.”īarbara T. “The Drake Well was the first commercial well drilled for the purpose of finding oil. ![]() |
